SATYAGRAHA HOUSE
Our rooms

Reverend Doke & Manilal Gandhi

The second room located in the historic house is dedicated to Mahatma’s second son, involved in the movement initiated by his father. Its small dimensions give it a warm atmosphere and its location allows permanent access to the museum.

Thambi Naidoo, Henri Polak & Sonja Schlesin

Lawyer, journalist and Gandhi’s friend , Henry Polak lends his name to one of the three rooms of the new wing whose architecture had to be fundamentally different from the historic house. Thus, to break with the immaculate white of the Kraal, the South African brick prevailed. Plain, dominated by the whiteness of the khadi, this woven cotton cloth in which Gandhi wrapped himself , the decoration is composed of natural shades and materials, the antique furniture was sourced in India and South Africa.

Kasturba Gandhi

It is the largest and maybe the most beautiful room of the house. Located inside the historic house, in an extension from 1920s, this room was obviously named after Kasturba, Gandhi’s faithful wife. Its parquet floor surrounds a large bed, itself facing a fireplace. Two armchairs surround this fireplace and a desk offers a view over the vegetable garden. Beneath the impressive framework, furniture found in India and South Africa adorns this suite which offers immediate access to the museum.
